HOW TO WASH UNDERWEAR, LOOK AT THE LABEL

13 March 2023

Underwear is a basic element of the wardrobe, which guarantees comfort and gives confidence. However, due to the large number of different materials and types of lingerie, it can be difficult to know how to properly care for each item. In order for the underwear to serve as long as possible, it is important to follow the care instructions indicated on the label.

One of the most common questions regarding the care of underwear is how to wash a bra. Bras are an important part of women's underwear and can be quite expensive, so it is important to take care of them properly. The first thing to check is the care label, as some bras are machine washable and others can only be hand washed.

When you are washing your bra in the washing machine, it's important to use a gentle cycle and avoid using hot water, as this can damage the elastic fabric and underwire. It's better to wash bras in a laundry bag to protect them from getting tangled or damaged during washing.

When it comes to drying your bra, it's important to avoid heat, as this can damage the elastic fabric and underwire. The best way to dry a bra is to lay it out in the air, away from direct sunlight.

And the best source of information about laundry care is its label.

Washing

The first thing you should pay attention to on the label is a sign with a hand drawn on it, which means that this item is only hand washed, in general, this symbol is most often found on underwear. Hand washing is often recommended for delicate items such as silk, lace and mesh, as the vibration of the washing machine can damage these delicate materials. While hand washing, it is important to use a mild detergent and avoid wringing your laundry, as this can also damage it.

If there is a crossed-out tank sign on the label, it means that such a product cannot be washed at all, most likely only dry cleaning is suitable.

The sign of a crossed-out knot means that the fabric is not recommended to get writhen.

The washing symbol with one line below means that the laundry can be washed on a fast cycle at low speed.

A washing sign with two lines means that the laundry needs to be washed on the delicates cycle with non-aggressive detergents. Such symbols may indicate the temperature at which washing should be done.

Washing temperature

There is another important factor to consider when washing clothes, which is the temperature of water. The label usually indicates the maximum temperature at which the laundry can be washed. Hot water should be avoided as it can shrink or damage delicate materials, while cold water is usually safe for most laundry.

Ironing

The iron symbol without additional markings allows ironing. If the standard sign is supplemented with elements in the form of dots, it means requirements regarding the temperature limit: one dot - up to 110°C, two - up to 150°C, and three - up to 200°C.

The crossed-out iron sign means that it is very dangerous to iron the item, because there is a high risk of irreversible damage to the fabric.

And there is also a variant of the symbol with a crossed-out steaming part, such clothes can be ironed without using the steam function.

Whitening

The triangle sign on the label means that any bleachers are allowed for this product.

The sign of a crossed-out triangle means that the use of bleachers is prohibited for such laundry.

If a triangle with two lines inside is depicted, it means that bleaching is possible, but without the use of chlorine.

If CL is in the triangle, then chlorine bleaching is allowed.

Dry cleaning

The general designation on the label is a circle. If it is empty and crossed out, then dry cleaning is not allowed for this product. If there is a letter in the crossed-out circle, this means that a specific type of cleaning is prohibited.

The letter "A" symbolizes dry cleaning with any solvents, and the letter "P" means dry cleaning with the use of perchlorethylene or petroleum-based solvents. If we are talking about the letter "F", then this is a dry cleaning using petroleum solvents, and the letter "W" means professional wet cleaning.

Sometimes the labels depict a circle with the letter "W", which is underlined with one line from the bottom - this means the need for delicate professional wet cleaning. If there are two lines - then it should be a very careful professional cleaning.

Drying

When it comes to drying your laundry, it's important to avoid direct sunlight or heat such as a clothes dryer. Heat can damage delicate materials and cause shrinkage. Instead, it is better to lay out the laundry to dry in the air, away from direct sunlight. If necessary, you can carefully squeeze out extra water, but do not twist or wrench the laundry.

As for the markings on the label, there are 3 main symbols:

Square - dry on a dryer or clothes line.

A circle in a square - can be dried in a drying machine.

A crossed out circle in a square - cannot be dried in a drying machine.

After all, taking care of your lingerie is an important part of keeping it looking good and ensuring it serves as long as possible. Laundry care labels can be confusing, but they're necessary to keep your laundry in great shape. The care instructions on the label are your best resource for proper cleaning and care of your laundry.
